    Hi Anita,
    I took my old job back that I was laid off from 2 years ago. Yet, the expect me to pick up where I left off and remember details for over 20 clients. I’m back on a “contingency basis” but it was never fully explained to me as to what that means nor did I ever sign anything agreeing to such. Does this mean that if I get fired, they can deny any unemployment benefits I could qualify for? What exactly is a contingency basis anyway?

      Nervous, You must get clarification that the “contingency basis” is a probation period rather than meaning you have been hired as a contingent worker (or independent contractor). See If you were hired as an independent contractor, you may not qualify for unemployment benefits. Speak to your manager to get a satisfactory explanation.

    Hello Anita, I have a very important question (for myself) as I am discouraged BUT desperate in finding employment. I am 54 now-no Friends-NO Family to help or rely on.

    My problem is I feel inferior to others due to my Physical-Mental Ailments as I have tried enlisting with multiple-countlss Staffing Agencies within (Washington State) close to my residency. I hve partial ailments (Partial Blindness-Extreme Fatigue) & it is very hard for me to seek work work even for a short time as they do not want me. I have catered to many employment Titles (including Warehouse Worker) of all things , but need to work. ButALL are looking for this sort of background + a longer term existance since been working Temp assignmentsas no one has a need for such a good worker. Question: (other than the normal (Indeed-CareerBuilder-SemiDisability sites that have nothing + every other alert job sites) existing on line or popular>> what (sites) can I go to where dealing with persons in this situation needing to find work desperatly or specifically deal with (employers) that cater to me?

      Capucine, I would find an organization within your community that helps people with special needs find employment. Call government agencies and ask for referrals. Good luck!

    I’ve learned to investigate potential companies prior to submitting my resume / application, and in doing so sometimes I can not find out what the company pays. Is it alright to ask during the interview?

    Hello again Anita,

    I come seeking advice regarding job search with mental disabilities. I have moved out of California to southern Oregon. I found treatment for my depression, along with that I am starting treatment for Generalized Anxiety and soon PTSD. I just turned 50 in April. I hope to find employment with a company that is compassionate of these conditions.

    Please help not worked in over 15 years I was a stay-at-home housewife and now I find myself unemployed broke and hopeless I don’t know what to do I don’t know how to start or where to start I’m intelligent so I should know how to do this but I don’t. Anita can you help me

      Mary, Don’t lose hope! I’ll give you a quick answer now, and expand on it in an upcoming blog post. First, assess your skills. You may want to create a “functional” style résumé rather than chronological. If you don’t have a lot of work experience prior to your 15-year gap, start applying for entry-level positions just to get some money coming through the door. Consider working for a temporary staffing agency to try out different jobs for multiple companies in various industries. It might help you find one you like, and may even turn into temp-to-hire. Search by geographical area and key word here:

    Hey anita, im currently searching for a job and it seems that i dont get many interests. Im 23 yesrs old and have worked for a hotel and some different places as a cashier. I realized it could be from the time gaps in my work history and considering the jobs i did have were short term. I have volunteered and babysat children of all ages, as well as cared for my now ex husband. With little to no experience would creating a resume be necessary? How can i make the time gaps seem valid? Is there any examples you could give? Hoping for some help….Eager to get the ball rolling. Thanks!

      Jaysing, are you applying to job openings in the United States? If so, many smaller companies may not be familiar with the legalities of sponsoring a foreign worker. Even if they do know the ins and outs, hiring a native U.S. employee may be an easier path, so unless you bring a skill that no other applicant can bring, the company may not pursue the more paperwork laden option of sponsoring a non-native with a green card or visa. I would also suggest that you work with a native English speaker on your résumé (that’s American for CV) and your cover letter. You will want to customize the cover letter (and even the résumé. Study the job description and address what the employer is looking for and how you above all others can fulfill their key needs.

    Hi Anita. I’ve applied for several jobs online that haven’t been responded to. The websites say that the jobs are still open. What’s the best way to contact a company and ask them about the positions that have been available for six months or longer?

      Jeff, 57 percent of job openings that aren’t filled during that first month will likely remain unfilled for three months or more. That means that the company isn’t having an easy time finding the “perfect” person to fill the role. If you have an email address, follow up indicating you still have an interest in the position, and feature reasons you fit the bill that you may not have mentioned in your original submission. If you filled out an online application, see if you can track down the HR manager’s name and email via LinkedIn or other research, and reach out to that individual via email. Good luck!

    Hello Anita,

    I am a job seeker, and I am listed on several job boards. I recently found a job on a job board that I am interested in, (Company A), I did not apply, I was waiting for a time that I could devote 100% of my attention to it. The same day I found this job, I received an e-mail from a different company (Company B), asking me for a phone conference for a position they think will fit perfectly with my background. I had the phone conference and was not given the name of the company, but figured out it is the same company (Company A). I have submitted my resume to Company B, but have not heard back. Is it ethical for me to apply directly for the position on Company A’s website?

      Since you were not given the name of Company A by Company B, you may be mistaken in your hypothesis. Go ahead and apply to Company A. If it is the same business, they’ll be put on notice that you aren’t waiting around on them and are continuing to look for a suitable position. It can’t hurt!

        Thank you very much. This was my way of thinking but I didn’t want to appear “rude”. I have applied, time will tell. The one thing I appreciated by applying online was that I was able to submit a cover letter when I applied online. A cover letter helps me explain my abnormal resume in a logical way.

    I was recently offered a temp to perm position with a previous employer at a law firm. Since my departure, I had a minor traffic violation that resulted in a warrant for missing court since I couldn’t find a ride there. Should I notify them prior to them running a background check or wait to see if it pops up?

    Hello Anita,

    Last year I had an altercation with my husband which resulted in me being arrested. In February of this year I took a plea for simply battery assuming that I wouldn’t have any trouble getting a job since most employers don’t ask about misdemeanors. Well I was wrong! I haven’t been able to even get a job interview. It was my first arrest. I have a bachelor’s degree in Finance. Do you know of companies that will give me an opportunity to gain employment?
